MARK HOFFMANN aka MARK DIDGE or 'EMDEE'

how long have you been playing didgeridoo for?
I have been playing for fourteen years, before that I was into percussion, bongos, congas etc..

were you taught by an aboriginal?
I am self taught and have never studied traditional rhythms I spent years travelling around Australia living in remote areas and just tuned into my surroundings.
I am aware that the didgeridoo is a sacred instrument to the indigenous peoples of Australia and I show my respect by not appropriating any of their songs...I am lucky to have been given a nod from Djalu who is a respected aboriginal elder here in the NT who,s respect I have earned by being true to myself and making his people dance!

what are your influences?
My influences are many....drum and bass, dub, reggae, heavy metal! Any kind of high energy music or tribal sound I can groove to. I spent many years travelling with my partner Shayote to various underground festivals very tribal, lots of drumming circles, chanting, fire twirling and dance parties too.

what other bands have you played in?
I was solo at the beginning of my career and then hooked up with Grant Smith and Gavin Shoesmith, we were known as 'Katamaran' and played together for eighteen months. I have also had the pleasure of playing with a band called Rynsaardt with an incredible guitarist check them out if you get the chance. I also spent some time touring with well known high energy blues outfit Blue Shaddy.

are you working on any other music projects?
I'm always working on new sounds and experimenting. At the moment I am working on material for my next solo didge album following on from 'Raw Didge' and will be recording in the near future

what has been the highlight of your career so far?
The highlight of my career would have to be meeting James Brown backstage at the Botanical Blues and Roots festival in 2004 .I actually got to hug the god of rock!!
Other highlights include Southbound, supporting Xavier Rudd and playing at the East Coast Blues n Roots festival.
